Wigan snatched the result, thanks to Darren Sheridan's strike in the 61st minute but Lions hitmen Paul Moody and Harris looked particularly dangerous throughout the game.

Millwall defenders Stuart Nethercott and David Tuttle were in control of the match from the start as the Millwall frontmen went close to opening the scoring.

Harris fired a shot just wide of the upright and, in 16 minutes, saw his shot on the turn fly well off target. The Lions' best chance in the first half came when Moody shot across goal after Millwall counter-attacked from a Latics setpiece.

But the winning strike came just after the hour mark when Livermore conceded a dubious free kick on the far edge of the penalty area which Sheridan took. His shot deflected off Livermore and into the net through the keeper's legs.

Wigan keeper Scott Green then saved well from Lions sub Paul Shaw as Millwall threw everything at Wigan, but the Latics held on in a repeat of last season's Auto Windscreens final.

Harris said: "That is two seasons in a row it has happened to us against Wigan. Perhaps with the exception of Scunthorpe, it was the best away performance we have produced in many years at the club and yet we lost. They seem to get all the luck against us. I am gutted."

While Harris committed his future to the Lions there are fears the club still faces losing other star players such as Tim Cahill and Lucas Neill.

Chairman Theo Paphitis confirmed players have attracted interest from the big guns and said: "It is very difficult if a Premiership club comes in and makes a bid. It would obviously distract the player and to keep him we would have to pay more money and we simply cannot afford to do that.

"All I can say at the moment is I have no plans to let anyone go."
