Dear councillors,

I have been quadriplegic for 38 years. I am confined to an electric wheelchair and my legs go into spasm.

As I don't have any family, the night-sitting service has been a lifeline and I have used it for 12 years.

If my limbs are in the wrong position, I get very painful cramps and spasms. But the night sitter can move me to the left or right.

I also need help with washing, dressing, food preparation and using the toilet.

Painting is my only hobby as I do have some power left in my hands and I find it very therapeutic. But I often drop things and need someone to pick them up.

And if I start coughing, I can't ring a bell and wait half an hour for someone to pat me on the back.

I value the peace of mind of knowing someone is there on the spot, whatever the time is.

And it's somebody who has grown to know my individual needs and can do what I want immediately and without any trouble.

Bromley Council's plans to cut the service will have a devastating impact on me.

I can't expect my carer to work 24 hours a day, seven nights a week. Social services should spend a night here and see just what's involved.

The service is important to me for my sanity and for the sanity of my carer.

Money spent on night sitters is a drop in the ocean for the social services budget.

Any alternative like regular specialist respite care would surely cost as much or more than retaining the night-time employees.

There has been no consultation with the clients and we would welcome the opportunity to put our position across more fully.
