South Croydon teenager William Straker has raised £2,000 of sponsorship for his expedition to Borneo but hopes to raise the final £400 by taking part in a one-man triathlon, writes Angeline Albert.

The 18 year-old will undertake a 500m swim, 24km bike ride and 5km run during his triathlon on April 7 but is ready to take up a challenge at home if it brings him nearer to his work abroad.

The Camden Road resident will join 34 other young people on April 29 in a 10 week expedition organised by Trekforce, a charity that has supported communities in developing countries since 1990.

The group will be split into two to engage in separate projects, which could see William building a 80x40ft warden's post for visitors to Borneo's virgin jungles.

Alternatively he may be required to build bridges whilst there but William is confident he can raise the cash needed and summon the strength for the hard tasks abroad.

"I go to the gym regularly and am confident I can complete my triathlon. I've nearly reached my target of £2,400 which goes straight to the charity but I must also pay for my flights and kit."

"I am really looking forward to the expedition and it feels good to do something for another community. I expect I'll come back with a broader outlook on life."
