AN Isle of Wight road has been closed this morning (Saturday) after a section 'collapsed'.

Police said they were forced to close Collingwood Road, Shanklin following a report part of it had collapsed.

A section of the road, close to the town's British Legion club, was reported by a member of the public to have sunk by several inches.

IW Council highways engineers were this morning assessing the cause and organising repairs.

Route 2 and 3 buses are affected by the diversion.

Gas engineers were called later in the day after reports that a pipe had fractured. Members of the public reported a strong smell of gas.
