A new energy project, which could bring cleaner, greener power to Island homes, is launched next week. Ecoisland, the Island’s green community interest company, is working with Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) on the plan, which is also aimed at saving householders money on their bills.Customers who sign up to Community Energy will contribute to a Community Energy fund, which, Ecoisland says, will go towards projects, including growing spaces for communities, beach cleans and electric bikes.Ecoisland sees the Community Energy project as just the start of a major plan to eventually provide energy which could be sold back to SSE through energy agreements.“It is part of a much wider vision to build an energy network on the Island that provides energy security for our residents while reducing energy bills,” said Ecoisland chief executive David Green. The wider vision for Ecoisland Community Energy includes: Renewable generation projects to provide the energy.A smart grid system enabling Ecoisland to manage the generation capacity and, on occasions, trade the energy to maximise return.Energy storage, enabling renewable power to be stored when there is a surplus and used later.Alternative fuels, such as the first commercial hydrogen refuelling station on the Island, with ten Transit vans and a community car club featuring a range of hydrogen vehicles for people to try.A home energy management system, that rewards careful users with prizes.Ecoisland is working with SSE towards opening a community energy shop in Newport in the near future, allowing potential customers to have their questions about the scheme answered by people in the know. The launch is on Tuesday at a venue and time yet to be announced but more information can be found at www.ecoisland/communityenergy
