Greyhound route to end

GREYHOUND is to axe its luxury bus services.

The services from Southampton and Portsmouth to London, which included travel deals on the Island and across The Solent, cease on November 17.

"Unfortunately, these services are not seeing sufficient passenger numbers and therefore we have reached the difficult decision to withdraw the buses from the routes," said a Greyhound spokesman.

"We would like to thank our Solent customers for travelling with Greyhound UK and can assure them they will continue to enjoy the same quality service right up until we stop operating."

The luxury buses, with leather seats, extended legroom and wi-fi, faced stiff competition on the routes from National Express.

The Greyhound service was launched more than three years ago, promising direct, low-cost travel to London.

I used the Southsea to Victoria route for a few months (instead of the train) but got annoyed with missing the 8pm Hovercraft every time. It was always traffic depending but I could never understand why if we got to Portsmouth at 7:45, the driver would drop off passengers at the Port, then at Gunwharf and then Southsea. Surely it is more logical to drop off Southsea passengers first, then Gunwharf, then the Port and head to the final destination at Fareham. Also they never ran an earlier enough service, the earliest Hover to meet a coach was 8:15. If you work in London as I do, there should have been an earlier one. Also they reduced services in the summer and move the 6pm coach from London to 6:15. So you had no chance of getting the Hovercraft. I often got off at Gunwharf to catch the Fast Cat. not surprised it is stopping but they only have themselves to blame.

Unfortunately, my experience of using the service from Southampton was not good. We were made to wait at Victoria while the driver finished chatting and having a cigarette. Consequently we were late arriving back in Southampton and had to run to catch the Red Jet, only just making it as they were closing the doors. I also used the Southsea route, but ended up waiting for ages in Southsea on both legs of the journey. Nice coaches, though!

Greyhound didn't do themselves any favours with the combined Hovercraft / coach ticket from London.
I gave up after the evening services were often late, resulting in the Greyhound rolling up to Southsea a few minutes after the 8pm cross-Solent service had left, resulting in a wait of nearly an hour.
We had booked to meet those 8pm crossings, so the wait was not a good start to our Island visits.
