A YACHT which ran aground off the Isle of Wight on Saturday evening was helped back afloat by Cowes RNLI lifeboat.

The 35ft yacht, Pure Magic, alerted Solent Coastguards it had gone aground on Gurnard Ledge in a south westerly wind on its was from Hamble to Beaulieu.

The yacht had two couples on board, according to an RNLI spokesman.

The lifeboat helm, Patrick Moreton, put James Chillman aboard with a tow-line. After the lifeboat turned the yacht round towards clear water it eventually refloated on the rising tide.

As a precaution, James remained on board while the lifeboat escorted Pure Magic to Cowes Yacht Haven.
