Groups to meet over no-confidence vote

By Ross Findon - Tuesday, February 9, 2010

COUNCIL boss Steve Beynon is due to meet with Unison branch secretary Mark Chiverton and regional union organiser Andy Straker today (Tuesday).
The meeting follows a vote of no confidence, on Friday, in council leader Cllr David Pugh and chief executive Mr Beynon, overwhelmingly supported by around 150 Unison members.
Letters were sent to both to explain the reasons behind the vote, including the ongoing dispute over essential car users’ allowance, concerns over budget cuts and the row over Mr Chiverton’s role at the council — thrown into doubt by claims he was told he would have to quit if he stood in the general election.
Cllr Pugh said he noted their concerns, many of which were management issues which would be discussed in today’s meeting.
He confirmed Mr Chiverton had been given assurances over his position at the Isle of Wight Council as a full-time union representative and his plans to stand in the election.
"The chief executive has already given Mr Chiverton a written assurance he is not required to make a choice between resignation and standing down as a candidate in the forthcoming general election," said Cllr Pugh.
He said, however, they planned to push ahead with plans to save £50,000 by reviewing its financial support to the unions.
"This review will consider how council taxpayers’ money should contribute to the facilitation of union representation," he said.
Regarding the budget he said all local authorities had to make difficult budget decisions but he welcomed feedback at tonight’s cabinet meeting or at full council on February 24.
