Harbour plan boost for town

A £1.5 million plan to transform Yarmouth Harbour was unveiled on Tuesday.

Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners said they wanted to introduce more walk-ashore pontoons in the inner harbour and reduce the number of pile moorings.

But the commissioners accept their plans won’t please everybody, particularly the Yarmouth water taxi that ferries boat owners to and from their moorings.

"They are a business, they won’t be happy," conceded Phillip Keen, chairman of Yarmouth Harbour Commissioners.

"We can’t base our business on another business. We have to continue with our plans. They will have to look at their business and assess the impact and make a decision on that.

"We won’t be getting rid of all the moorings. We have moorings outside the harbour, there will be still some here and we have a lot up the river. It will reduce their business, there is no question about that."

Mr Keen said the commissioners were responding to the demands of both visitors and locals who use the harbour, as well as the need to increase income from the harbour, now a government requirement.

He said reconfiguring the layout of the harbour was the most cost effective and environmentally friendly scheme.

"We estimate there will be an increase in revenue of around £250,000 a year," said Mr Keen.

"The benefits for visitors — convenience. They can hook up to electricity, they have water and improved navigation within the harbour as well.

"It makes life easier for people coming in; they can be directed straight in and, if they are on a walk-ashore, they are more likely to visit the town."

The proposals are separate to another scheme for the south-west corner of the harbour, which will provide dedicated facilities for the fishing fleet.
