Health warning over heatwave

By David Newble - Thursday, July 2, 2009

HEALTH bosses on the Island are warning people to take extra care during the heatwave.
Temperatures are expected to peak today (Thursday) at 81F (27C) and health chiefs are asking people to take precautions to cope.
Advice to residents includes keeping out of the heat if at all possible, trying to say cool by dressing in light cotton clothes and taking cool showers or baths.
Health bosses are also advising people to drink plenty of water, even if they do not feel thirsty, and to avoid coffee or tea as they make dehydration worse.
You should also seek medical advice if you have an concerns.
Dr Jenifer Smith, director of public health and chief medical officer for the Isle of Wight, said: "Although severe heat waves are uncommon in England, the experience across Northwest Europe in 2003, when 27,000 people died as a direct result of the heatwave, is a reminder heat can be fatal.
"In case of a heatwave, make sure you look after your own health and that of your family. It is not just children who need special attention, be aware elderly people are also at risk and make sure they are being checked on."
