A BUS has brought down telephone lines in Merstone.

The incident, which involved a double-decker bus, happened earlier this afternoon (Friday).

The number 2 Southern Vectis bus was en route from Godshill heading towards Newport with 30 passengers on board when the driver stopped the vehicle after striking the cable.

The cable is thought to have been hanging low enough for the vehicle to hit it and snapped when it was struck.

The driver got out of the vehicle and checked the cable was not hazardous before calling BT to report the incident.

The bus was not delayed.

Around 13 customers lost their telephone service as a result of the accident.
A BT spokeswoman said "The company was hopeful services would be restored tomorrow (Tuesday)".
