A new, purpose built nursing home opened in Harrow Weald last week.

Rowanweald Nursing Home in Weald Lane has taken in 24 residents from Harrow Hospital in Harrow-on-the-Hill and Anmer Lodge in Stanmore.

The first, Madge Rowe, 80, who moved in on Tuesday from the hospital where she had been for three years, was presented with a bunch of flowers by Liz Mathews, the sister in charge. She said: "This feels like coming home. The decoration is beautiful and there is a lovely atmosphere."

Harrow and Hillingdon Healthcare Trust is leasing two of the 75-bed home's five suites from Sanctuary Care, a non-profitmaking organisation. It is the group's first purpose built nursing home, but two more are planned.

The accommodation is spread over three floors, each suite containing 15 bedrooms, with en-suite bathrooms, and a lounge-dining room and kitchen servery.

Staff from Harrow Hospital and Anmer Lodge have also moved to Rowanweald but will also continue to be employed by the trust, though Sanctuary Care will be responsible for the accommodation and residents' non-nursing needs, such as laundry.

Both Harrow Hospital and Anmer Lodge are due to close, but it is not yet clear what is intended for the sites.

o Brent and Harrow Health Authority has allowed three local nursing homes to expand.

Knights Court in High Street, Edgware, has increased its beds from 20 to 80; Coplands in Sudbury from 17 to 75, and Tara Hall in Harrowdene Road, Wembley, from nine to 10. A new nursing home opened in Harrow Weald last week.
