HOT air balloons of all shapes and sizes are due to take part in a new cross-Solent event this spring.

Around 20 balloons are expected to take part in the Snows Isle of Wight Balloon Challenge, set to take place on a date between March 22 and May 2, depending on the weather.

The balloons will fly from Fawley, Hampshire, across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

It has been organised by Hampshire organisation Digital 21st Event and Hot Air Balloon Services, sponsored by Snows car dealership, co-sponsored by Ordnance Survey, with support from Red Funnel and tourism body Visit Isle of Wight (VIOW).

Digital 21st operations manager Richard Cardy said it was their biggest project to date.

Event advisor Ian Sharpe co-organised a record breaking Channel flight in 2011.

With the UK and and the prevailing winds with land in Hamble or Gatwick depending on the strength of the wind!! Its a good idea the balloon festival in Soton was a huge event. Why not have it in an easterly direction from West Wight to East Wight? The sea breezes are unpredictable around the Island, in May the will cause an effect low level, due to the heating of land.Anyway its a great idea!!

I do like it when hot air balloons all set-off together. I hope the weather is much nicer and the event goes ahead. Good stuff.

The target landing spot is the Council Chamber at County Hall for refill of hot air to take off again.
