Bishops Stortford 1

Hendon 2

Hendon rose to sixth in the Ryman League Premier Division with a win which was a lot easier than the scoreline suggests.

After 25 minutes in difficult, blustery conditions, Paul Whitmarsh was denied his first Hendon goal by a brilliant save from Gavin King.

But King was left helpless after 29 minutes when Martin Sedgwick's miskick on the six-yard line gave Junior Lewis the simple chance to score.

Hendon extended the lead, and Whitmarsh got off the mark for the club in the 67th minute when the striker rode two desperate challenges before turning and sliding the ball under the advancing King's body.

In the 71st minute Stortford substitute Richard Thomas reduced the arrears when a hopeful ball bounced in the penalty area and he reacted quickest to fire home.

But Stortford's hopes disappeared in the 82nd minute when Will Cooper was sent off for his second bookable offence -- a dive in the penalty area.

HENDON: McCann, White, Howard, P. Kelly, Nugent, Bateman, Heard (Tello, 78), Hyatt, Whitmarsh, Howard, Lewis (Banton, 90). Sub: Bashir.

WINGATE AND FINCHLEY'S woe continued when they crashed 3-1 in a home league match with Corinthian Casuals on Tuesday and had Shamus Hayes sent off. Craig Pearl got Wingate's goal.
