Hopes for new use for youth club

Cowes Youth Centre building could be put to new use.

A NEW use could be found for Cowes’s closed youth club in Arctic Road — it could become the headquarters of the Island Youth Water Activities Centre (IYWAC) if the Isle of Wight Council agrees.

The proposal was revealed by IYWAC centre manager Mike Acton, during a presentation to members of Cowes Town Council.

He outlined plans to apply to the council for the building to be a community asset transfer to the charity.

He said: "Now the council has put Cowes Youth Club up for disposal, we hope it can be disposed of our way."

During his presentation to members, Mr Acton said IYWAC, which offers sailing courses to Island youngsters, was very popular.

However, he said the charity was let down by changing facilities at the current building.

He said: "The feedback forms from young people are fantastically positive. But one result which marks us down is facilities where people change."

• In a separate move, the town council turned down a request from IWYAC to back its community asset transfer bid for the former youth club. Members agreed it was better not to take a decision to support a particular bid until the bidding process was further forward.

It was run down when I was a Town Councillor in 200, with the current interest in dance and urban music could it not be used as a youth club community centre, with dance music rehearsals etc. Rather then the usual table tennis and smoking round the back?

it will be sold to developers and the facility lost for good, the money raised will be squandered in yet another pointless council stunt

Heres an idea..keep it as a youth club and make the council fulfill it obligations to its constituents rather than its feeble idiology
