THE devastated victim of an Isle of Wight hotel burglary has put up a £1,000 reward for the return of her jewellery.
Paul and Ruth Whitehurst, of Cambridgeshire, were staying at the Ocean Hotel in Sandown when thieves struck on August 23.
More than £12,000 worth of items were taken from three rooms, including a large quantity of ladies’ jewellery belonging to Mrs Whitehurst.
It was the second time the couple have been the victims of crime while holidaying on the Island.
Two years ago they were attacked in Ryde, causing Mr Whitehurst to have a stroke which left him blind in one eye.
Mrs Whitehurst said the jewellery, which included heavy gold and diamond bracelets, a ruby and diamond ring, a Chopard gold floating diamond necklace, a topaz necklace, ring and earrings and several pairs of diamond earrings, had been birthday, Christmas and wedding anniversary gifts from her husband over many years and were irreplaceable.
Since the theft, she has spent many hours searching the internet in a desperate bid to find the precious items and has offered a £1,000 reward for their recovery.
She said: "These bespoke pieces would be impossible to replace as we have bought them in many different countries.
"As you can imagine this has really upset us as the Isle of Wight is supposed to be one of the safest places in the UK."
Mrs Whitehurst added: "Surely there must be a way to get them back? There must be some decent honest people out their who would call the police if they were offered these items in the pub or some place similar.
"Everyone at the hotel was absolutely lovely. My heart went out to them, they were so upset — most of them were in tears themselves."
Mrs Whitehurst said they had been regular Island visitors for the past ten years and, despite everything, would continue to holiday here.
Last week the police appealed for witnesses to contact them.
