Hovercraft pilot in court over drink charge

Isle of Wight hovercraft pilot Richard Pease.

A HOVERCRAFT pilot has appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates this morning (Tuesday) charged with being over the alcohol limit while in charge of a Hovertravel vessel.

Richard Pease, of Wyatts Lane, Northwood, has been charged with driving a motor vehicle — namely a Freedom 90 Hovercraft — when over the alcohol limit, having 96mg in a sample breath.

He was also charged with contravening merchant shipping regulations by failing to present for duty free of alcohol.

It follows an incident in June, when a hovercraft with 36 passengers on board struggled to land at Ryde.

Mr Pease, 50, has yet to enter pleas.

The case was adjourned until September 8, at Isle of Wight Crown Court, and Mr Pease was released on unconditional bail.
