Hunt for new tourism boss

THE SEARCH to find someone to help lead the promotion of Isle of Wight tourism is on.

The Isle of Wight Council announced earlier this year it was working with private companies to establish a Destination Management Organisation to promote tourism.

The DMO, called Visit Isle of Wight Ltd, is a private sector-led not-for-profit company due to receive £3m over nine years from the Isle of Wight Council and £10,000 a year from 12 private partners to promote tourism on the Isle of Wight.

The £42,000-a-year job of marketing manager for the DPO has been advertised, with a deadline of Friday.

According to the advert the ideal candidate will have experience in the industry and lead a small team, working with a broad range of other organisations.

"Reporting to the board, the successful candidate will be expected to prepare an annual marketing plan, based on an agreed tourism strategy, reflecting the Island Plan.

"Responsible for two staff and working with other partners, they would manage the delivery and coordination of marketing and PR activities, manage & develop the current Island Breaks website, initiate research as appropriate, encourage improvements in the visitor offer and seek new sources of funding and investment."

For goodness' sake get some fresh blood in. Don't put a "charismatic" non-manager in a manager's job, and don't recycle the has-beens.

Here we go again. Amazing to think that they want to set up the best thing going and haven't contacted isleofwight.com.

I would offer the position to Derek Sandy. He's passionate and positive about the Island, he's quite well known thanks to his tv appearances and his singing and you've already got a theme song for the website. Or I might go for it myself.....
