AN INDEPENDENT political group on the Isle of Wight is a step closer to choosing a parliamentary candidate for the 2015 General Election.
A shortlist of three candidates, which have not been named publicly, has been selected and interviews are due to take place this month.
Chairman of the Isle of Wight Association of Independents Peter Whiteman said: "We anticipate being in a position to endorse a candidate within the next two weeks.
"We desperately need an MP whose one and only interest is representing and promoting the needs of Islanders and the Island, completely free of the constraints of party politics and toeing the party line."

The idea of a selection process for an "independent" is an oxymoron. If the selected person does gain a seat and votes in a division against the wishes of those who selected him/her then those people are going to be pretty unhappy and put pressure on him/her to toe the line in future. And that'd be no different to the "whipping" used by the big parties, really.

Yes, my dictionary says "independent" - not subordinate to others, not relying on others, having sufficient private means of subsistence.Funny sort of group then

How can they be a 'political group' if they're independent? In any event, as a 'political group' they're just the same as any other socialist political party, they just want to spend our money!

That, Stephan, is called Democracy. If you don't like it, I suggest you sod off to a country with a political system more to your liking.Perhaps you'd like to tell us which country that's be?

You are all debating who should rule you...Do you not know how sad that sounds."I vote for Mr/Ms/Miss/Mrs X because I am incapable to make sound judgments on issues affecting me" Sack parliament, it's not working and refresh the system. Ask MP Miller why!

Dave, I hope it's not Whitehouse! The guy seems even more arrogant and self-deluded than Pugh. Or perhaps he would be a good person to have as the Conservative candidate if we want to see the Tories out.You are being completely blunt, and honest. The real MP on the Island has not been Andrew Turner. Everyone knows that he is a front for the person in his office who runs the whole show. Rumour has it that she is trying to join the Tory Party at the moment. Will they let her in?
