AN INQUEST opened today (Monday) into the death of an elderly Isle of Wight driver died following a head-on collision with another car last week.
William John Watson, 93, of Golden Ridge, Freshwater, had been driving towards Newport on Tuesday and was overtaking a stationary school bus when he collided with an oncoming car, on Newport Road, near Tapnell Farm, close to Freshwater.
Isle of Wight Coroner’s Court heard Mr Watson, a retired lorry driver, was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital from the scene but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Assistant coroner John Matthews said Mr Watson suffered multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a road traffic collision and adjourned the inquest until March 18, 2014.
