Internet problems for Sky customers

UPDATED 20:13*

SKY customers on the Isle of Wight were without broadband and phone services for several hours today (Wednesday).

According to Sky, customers across most of the Isle of Wight were affected.

Earlier today a spokesman said: "We’re sorry for the service problems that some of our customers may be experiencing on the Isle of Wight.

"BT Openreach has advised that some planned maintenance to their local exchanges has over-run. We’re working with their team to get this resolved as quickly as possible. In the meantime, customers can visit our dedicated service status website or call our customer service team for updates."

The problems were said to have been resolved by mid-afternoon, but returned during the evening.

*The company said at 6pm there were major issues with broadband and phone services in areas across the south.

In a statement on it's service status website the firm said: "We are aware of an issue with the broadband service in the Cowes, Newport, Ryde, Shanklin, Sandown, Ventnor, Blandford, Gillingham, Shaftesbury, Shirley, Totton, Wimborne and Woolston areas.

"We are working hard to resolve this and apologise for any inconvenience caused."

I agree, WF could be cheaper. I pay quite a bit but I do get 98mb download and 10.2mb upload which is decent. (Basically it takes me about 60 seconds to download a movie)

BT infinity is supposedly coming to my area in March this year with "upto" 160mb/20mb. - currently can only get 18mb with terrible upload speeds with them from my local exchange.

The main issue is that I have had arguments with BT/Virgin in the past with their unlimited download - apparently over 700gb isn't classed as "fair use"! Plus WF doesn't actively filter any domains or traffic-shape (at least it doesn't seem to!)

For gaming and having my 24/7 server, I don't think I could get better, tend to get really low latency and have sufficient upload to access my server from work!

Of course, it depends on your circumstances, if you hardly use the internet, get the free one from Sky, otherwise WF offer 10mb fiibre for a tenner a month!

Ming, I'm glad I'm not the only one that saw that one. It's the classic "No internet detected, do you want to search online for help" error!

As far as internet goes, if you are in Cowes/Newport/Binstead I can heavily reccommend Wightfibre over BT/Sky for reliability and speed. Only had a couple of hours downtime in a few years with them - plus fastest brandband on the IoW is pretty neat :P

I'm suprised that it was just Sky that had problems, I though they used the BT exchange?
