THE Island’s council is one of the worst in the country for providing enough affordable homes to meet local need, according to figures released by Shelter this week.

A league table produced by the housing charity shows the Isle of Wight is providing just seven per cent of the affordable homes needed, ranking it 282nd out of 323 English local authorities. Shelter says there are 5,230 households on the housing waiting list here.
