TABLE OF EXPENSES

AS ANGER continues nationally over MPs’ expenses, Andrew Turner has revealed details of his claims from the controversial Accommodation Costs Allowance (ACA).

He revealed he registered his Newport home as his second home, with a property in London as his main address.

Last year he claimed £13,355 in mortagage interest, £1,609 in council tax, £92 for water and £375 for telephone for the Island property.

A further £3,969 was spent on repairs to the property, including to the roof and replastering, and insurance.

He pledged to post details of future claims on-line.

“In making the claims I have tried to differentiate between maintenance, repairs and replacement costs that were allowable and improvements that were not.

“For instance in the same year I replaced the kitchen and paid for it myself.”

Mr Turner said a third property, in Cowes, which is tenanted and part owned with his partner, Carole Dennett, was not subject to any claims.

He said it was impossible to commute daily to parliament because of the long hours it sat and he registered his Island home as second home in line with rules about the amount of time spent at the different properties.

In addition to the ACA, often referred to as the second homes allowance, Mr Turner said he claimed £108,842 last year to run his office. That included the salary of four full-time staff, including Miss Dennett.

Mr Turner said he was sad about the impact the discredited system of MPs’ allowances had caused in public confidence in democracy.

“For myself, I accept my share of the responsibility and admit that I am embarrassed by it all.

“It has been a very uncomfortable time, but I hope you will now have a clearer understanding of my own position and in a few weeks the complete records will be published,” said Mr Turner.
