ISLAND MP Andrew Turner has welcomed the national introduction of Sarah’s Law-style legislation, which allows parents to do background checks on people who work with children.

The new law, which was piloted in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, is set to be introduced nationwide, by the Home Office.

The legislation enables parents, carers and guardians to enquire whether an individual, who has access to a child, is a registered sex offender.

Mr Turner, who met Sara Payne, the mother of a young girl who was abducted and murdered, said: "I have always believed the protection of vulnerable people is more important than the human rights of criminals."
