Island prepares for swine flu

By Richard Wright - Friday, July 3, 2009

THE NHS is gearing-up for the predicted swine flu epidemic.
Amid expectation of a big rise of cases across the UK and the surge of visitors to the Island, public health officials stressed the need to follow national guidance
"As many will be aware from the continuing national media updates, it seems inevitable that a number of people on the Island will be affected by flu in the coming months," said Island director of public health Dr Jenifer Smith.
"With the change in arrangements for managing cases announced in parliament, Island medical staff will continue to assess cases who present with flu symptoms and, where appropriate, provide treatment in line with the Health Protection Agency guidelines.
"However, many people may choose not to seek treatment because the illness is mild in those who do not have underlying conditions," she said.
Government announced an immediate end to contact tracing and prophylaxis in all regions; GPs will now provide clinical diagnosis of swine flu cases rather than awaiting laboratory test results.
Guidance to doctors is designed to ensure that those at higher risk — including those with chronic lung, kidney or heart disease, under fives, over 65s and pregnant women — get priority access to antiviral drugs, within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms.
Dr Smith said: "I would encourage local people not to be alarmed.
"It is important we all continue to follow the Catch It, Bin It, Kill it advice to reduce the risk of spreading infection.
"Anyone who is concerned they may have swine flu (A/H1N1) should stay at home and contact the National Flu Information Line on 0800 151 3513, NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or telephone their GP or the Island doctors’ line on 0845 60 31 007."
Symptoms are similar to those of seasonal flu, usually a feverish illness accompanied by one, or more, of cough, sore throat, headache and muscle aches.
