Islanders witness the end of an Illustrious era

HMS Illustrious passes the Isle of Wight on its way to its home port of Portsmouth Harbour for the final time. Pictures by

ISLANDERS enjoyed a fantastic view of HMS Illustrious as it made its final voyage into its home port of Portsmouth earlier this week.

The helicopter carrier is due to be retired after 32 years of service around the world, including the Falklands, Bosnia and Iraq.

HMS Illustrious gave a gun salute as it arrived at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbour on Tuesday and its arrival was marked with a flypast of Apache, Lynx, Merlin, Sea King and Chinook helicopters.

Beach-goers in Ryde, including photographer Graham Reading, who took these pictures, were treated to a great view of the spectacle.
