Some of the Isle of Wight's best green spaces have been recognised nationally.
QUALITY green spaces on the Isle of Wight have been recognised nationally.
Appley Park, Ryde, founded in 1798, was among 1,424 parks and green spaces across the country to receive a Green Flag Award, a scheme run by Keep Britain Tidy, recognising open spaces, which meet high standards.
Green Flag Community Awards, formerly Green Pennant Awards, for open spaces managed by community groups and volunteers, were awarded to the Shanklin Voluntary Youth and Community Centre and Play Lane Millenium Green in Ryde.
George Brown, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member responsible for the environment, was delighted with Appley Park's award.
He said: "There are very strict standards required to be awarded a Green Flag and it is credit to the staff who work in our parks and countryside that Appley has once again been given this prestigious recognition.
"There has also been an increase in the number of people who use the park over the last year which demonstrates its popularity is increasing among residents and visitors.
"The park has been here for almost 220 years and it is very important we maintain our green spaces for the public to enjoy for many more years."
The 2012 Green Flag will be officially raised at Appley Park tomorrow (Wednesday), at 3pm.
