Skateboarders got the chance to show off their skills at Hertsmere's first dedicated skatepark in Borehamwood on Saturday.

A tarmac area has been created by the borough council at Maxwell Hillside Park, off Bullhead Road, for skateboarders and in-line skaters.

The council is currently seeking funding to provide special equipment, although skateboarders are already using their own ramps there.

Aaron Niblett, the area parks monitoring officer, said the council began the project after receiving requests for a local skating facility.

"This is something that people really wanted, and hopefully now the skateboarders will get a lot of enjoyment out of it," he said.

The skating area is 187 square metres in size, and the council aims to install a large ramp structure, a mini-ramp and a 'grind rail'.

The project is part of a wider scheme to enhance the park, which has involved the setting up of a 'friends group' to help look after the open space.
