Isle of Wight councillors ‘value for money’

COUNCILLORS’ allowances on the Island are among the lowest for comparable authorities in the south, according to The Taxpayers’ Alliance.

The Isle of Wight Council members are paid a basic allowance of £7,903 a year, compared with Portsmouth City Council’s £10,200.

The figure at Southampton City Council is £11,159.16 and £12,003 at Hampshire County Council.

Borough councillors at Fareham receive £6,465 and their Gosport counterparts £5,652.

The leader of the Isle of Wight Council, Cllr David Pugh, is paid a special responsibility allowance of £23,709 in addition to the basic rate.

The leader of Hampshire County Council receives nearly £41,000 a year.

Earlier this year, members of the Isle of Wight Council voted to freeze their allowances.

Council leader, Cllr David Pugh, said: "It is difficult to compare different authorities which have differing functions but councillors on the Isle of Wight continue to accept the recommendations of our remuneration panel.

"I would like to think we provide value for money."

It must be very difficult for any council to run the island s enviroment and it economy in these times of resession you have an outdated sewer system that over loaded by development in all your major 5 towns Cowes the pan eastate in Newport will create the same problem as in Cowes Cowes being the worst an antiquated road system that is risking lives every day unemployment the worst in the country and will double in the winter this creates vandalism by the youth of the island A good start would be to take control of your ferries wightlink Australian owned I for one would not entertain the job and just a P S to all these scribes who moan I bet not one get off there butts to vote

Now lets be thankful, they are not being paid over the odd's... is that why they are making such a mess of everything, big underspend !! so lets build some beach huts... second thoughts, no lets put next years council tax up and not waste the underspend on the beach huts. Value for money... NO... in the words of Lord Sugar... "youre fired "
