A Kew couple have appealed for egg donors to come forward to fulfil their dream of having a second baby.

They movingly spelt out their desire to find a woman willing to give the ultimate gift of life and provide their daughter with a brother or sister.

The couple, who want to remain anonymous, fear time is running out because they are both in their late 30s.

They said: "We share our heartbreak with our three-year-old daughter who was born because someone donated eggs. She has told us that she desperately wants a baby brother or sister made like she was.

"Unhappily, infertility dominates our lives as we scrape together the money needed for treatments and we just keep going, trying not to despair.

"The whole process of hospital treatment and failure took years until the wonderful gift of our daughter."

A spokesman for the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, which regulates egg donations, said demand has doubled in the past three years and that more donors were always needed.

He added: "We need to raise the awareness that more and more donors are needed and the gift they can be giving to childless couples.

"The stigma is disappearing in terms of in-vitro fertilisation and the same will happen with egg donors."

The Kew couple spent £9,000 on three unsuccessful attempts at producing a test-tube baby through in-vitro fertilisation.

They eventually turned their attentions to the ultimate solution of using donor eggs.

They said: "We are searching for a volunteer to give us another chance. Our daughter is proof that it has all been worthwhile and could be again. Each day we know time is running out for us and we have so much to give our family."

Women aged between 21 and 35 who would like to help the Kew couple, or others like them, by donating eggs anonymously should contact 0171 259 9038 for further information quoting reference 193799.

Childcare and travelling expenses will be paid.
