Wingate and Finchley's predicament as they battle to avoid a swift return to Division Three became more perilous during Easter, despite Saturday's win over doomed bottom club Chalfont St Peter.

Goals by Richard Baum (penalty, 64mins) and Geoff Sawyer (84mins) gave Wingate their first league success for four months.

But, with three to to go down, they were left third-from-bottom, as Molesey climbed above them with two convincing Bank Holiday victories. After winning 4-1 at Hungerford on Saturday, they beat Monday's visitors Tooting and Mitcham 3-0. Molesey have a point more and a vastly superior goal difference.

Both have three games to play. Wingate's remaining fixtures are Witham (away, Saturday), Horsham (home Tuesday) and Tooting and Mitcham (home, Saturday, May 6).

Molesey, away to Cheshunt on Saturday, are home to title-chasing Ford United on Tuesday, and complete their programme on Saturday, May 6 at home to Chalfont, who have won only two of their 40 matches, and have yet to record an away victory in 20 attempts!

Immediately above Molesey are Leighton Town, who also have three games to play, and have four points more than Wingate. Away to Wokingham on Saturday, they finish with two home games, against Cheshunt on Thursday and Hungerford (Saturday, May 6).
