A SAINSBURY’S Sport Relief Mile event, which took place between Sandown and Shanklin, has raised almost £900 for charity.

The Isle of Wight event was organised by the Isle of Wight YMCA group and involved around 100 people, who were sponsored to complete the challenge.

Through the generosity of Islanders who donated and participated in the event, enough funds have been raised to provide a young carer in the UK with one-to-one support for a year, to help them cope with their responsibilities at home and at school.

Across the country, more than a million people took part in the Sport Relief Mile raising £62 million.

YMCA volunteer Sharon Larman said: "It was a cracker of a campaign and our local children’s charity worked really hard to get it right.

"I volunteered as a marshal for the day and the atmosphere was really amazing.

"Since then I have continued to volunteer with the YMCA, assisting with Children’s Targeted Services who also directly support young carers on the Island."

The final total raised was £881.10.
