Pat Salt with Chesney after being crowned World Winner in Finland.
A FORMER European champion Welsh springer spaniel has been named a World Winner at a show in Finland.
Pat Salt’s spaniel Islanza Oh Boy, who is known as Chesney, received his accolade after winning the Champions Class, as well as the Reserve Best of Breed and Reserve Best International Beauty classes at The World Dog Show in Helsinki this month.
Pat, who lives in Bagwich Lane, Godshill, said Chesney was a natural showman but was a pet first and foremost — he particularly enjoyed running around and getting covered in mud.
She said: "It is probably the most prestigious show as it’s a world show, so winning anything was a bonus.
"He coped really well with the flight and was with eight other dogs flying out for the show. He was the only Welsh springer spaniel from the UK."
She added: "As soon as the show bag, full of brushes and sprays, comes out of the wardrobe, he recognises it and gets excited. He knows he’s going somewhere."
Pat described four-year-old Chesney, one of 12 Welsh springer spaniels, as a 'velcro dog’.
"They’re called that because they just love to be with you."
Chesney has also been looking after a litter of seven puppies, born to one of Pat’s other dogs.
She said: "He loves puppies. He goes over and looks at them and licks them."
Chesney and Pat are heading to their next show in Rotterdam next Saturday, September 6.
