A WOOTTON farmer has offered the use of his land for a wind turbine, which he believes could become an iconic symbol for the Island.
Peter Rogers, 65, of Palmers Farm, has invited Wootton Bridge Parish Council to undertake a feasibility study, to determine if his farm is suitable for a community wind turbine.
Mr Rogers has 254 acres of land and already has three telecommunications masts at the farm but he hopes to enter a partnership with various organisations to take his turbine proposal forward.
"It’s very early stages and I’d like to get experts involved with the study but a wind turbine overlooking The Solent, which could be seen from the mainland, would be iconic for the Eco-Island strategy," said Mr Rogers.
The land he has suggested for the turbine is not in an area of outstanding natural beauty and he hopes the idea will generate support from Islanders.
"I am worried the Island is losing the opportunity to use wind turbines so I am offering my land to try to change that," said Mr Rogers, who has owned Palmers Farm for 24 years.
He has also planted more than 20,000 trees in the past eight years, with another 4,000 expected this year.
"My family are trying to raise awareness of the issues effecting the planet so we can help make a difference in the future," said Mr Rogers, who is married to Jenny, and has three children and five grandchildren.
The parish council will discuss the wind turbine proposal at its next meeting, on January 12.
