A JOBS fair for young people is to take place at the Isle of Wight College on Thursday, next week.

As well as jobs, the event, for young people aged between 14 and 24, will also offer careers advice.

"Your Future" has been organised by the college and the Isle of Wight Council.

It will feature over 25 employers and six universities as well as training providers and Job Centre Plus who will be running CV and interview workshops.

Companies looking for staff have also informed event organisers of their vacancies and Job Centre Plus staff will look to match up their clients with the prospective employers at the event.

Also in attendance will be organisations including the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, the National Apprenticeship Service and the Careers Development Group.

The event runs between 11am and 4pm and a free bus service is available between Newport Bus station and the college.

I wonder why!

Thank you Dan point taken.

But I don't see either of you explaining what efforts you have made to push yourselves into such as voluntary work or the voluntary environment to 'prove to others' that you are keen to get some form of experience because YOU are keen. OK a lot further in the 'age bracket', but I know of one person who volunteered and worked at the poject and is now a Manager there. The point is that 'HE' did the pushing himself forward.

So I will ask again, what voluntary work have either of you done for the experience and the fact that it says to others 'I am here this is what I can do. If you can't give me a job do you know someone who can?' and that final bit is very important on the Isle of Wight, in many cases it's not 'what you know but who you know'.

I'm not saying getting a job us as in doing it for us, I'm talking about GETTING jobs here for us. I'm not surprised why people don't like to live here

Yes Arran, I can see your problem in getting a job. After such a short while I understand. Best wishes for your future.

Tea Urn, Certificates. Paper Qualifications. What effort outside the college? Volunteering? Part time job? You have students leaving University with BA (Hons) but what effort in their holiday time have they put in to get experience?
A Naval Architect left University with a Degree in Naval Architecture. He wrote to the Chief Designer offering to work for 6 months to 'prove his worth and gain experience'. The offer was accepted. He is now a partner in the business, OK so it has taken time, but HE put himself out and offered to SHOW what he could do for free. I believe that they had to employ him for Insurance, Health and Safety reasons. What the terms were I don't know.

Attitude and Determination.

Determination and devotion to what you want to do.

My grandson knew at the age of 9 what he wanted to do and worked on it until this year when at the age of 17 he got what he wanted. A specific position in the Royal Marines. We went and visited him at the Royal Marine Commando Training Camp at Lympstone a couple of weeks ago. Happy as Larry doing what he set his heart at.

Determination and devotion to what you want to do. I ask both Arran and Dan. Do you 'know' what you want to do and what effort have you made? What part time jobs in your chosen field have you taken up to gain experience? What have you volunteered to do to get experience?

Serious genuine questions. Serious answers?

Dan it looks to me reading what is on, that with a little bit of effort and enthusiasm for a job, it will be a good opportunity to actually get a job.

25 employers?

6 Universities

Job Centre Plus

Training Providers, who I happen to know work with employers.

National Apprenticeship Scheme representatives.

Seems pretty good to me.

How about actually GETTING jobs for us, instead of advice that'll probably be pointless?
