A Wealdstone jeweller has been fined £2,000 for selling unhallmarked goods and using inaccurate scales.

Famegold, trading in High Street as Anthony Russell Jewellers, was investigated by Brent and Harrow trading standards officers after a shopper complained she had paid £1,210 for an unhallmarked gold ring.

Colleene Noori, 34, of Radnor Road, Harrow, was disappointed with the ring but was not aware of the importance of the missing hallmark until told by another jeweller.

The company admitted four offences under the Hallmarking Act of supplying or offering to supply unhallmarked jewellery and one offence under the Weights and Measures Act for using an inaccurate scales.

Harrow magistrates ordered the company to pay Ms Noori £460 compensation and £850 prosecution costs on Wednesday last week.

Trading standards director John Taylor said: "Hallmarking is the oldest piece of consumer protection legislation in the world and is a guarantee as to the quality of the jewellery for the public as well as the trade.

"Traders have a legal duty to ensure that they comply with all the legislation so that the public is not misled or cheated into buying inferior goods."
