ST MARY'S Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has received a belated Christmas present.
International mystery shopping company Douglas Stafford presented staff at the unit with a cheque for £1,500.
Every year the Portsmouth-based company chooses a charity or cause to support.
Throughout the year staff organised and participated in various fundraising activities and events, which included the Portsmouth Dragonboat Festival last May.
For 2009, they chose to donate their efforts to the Island’s NICU.
Pamela George, sister of the unit, said: "Thank you to all the staff at Douglas Stafford for raising this fantastic sum of money for us.
"We have a wish list of items of equipment we would like to purchase for our lovely new unit and this very generous donation will go a long way in helping us to do this."
On behalf of Douglas Stafford, director Diane Cook and chairman Nigel Cook presented the cheque to staff on Tuesday last week.
Mr Cook said: "I feel strongly about supporting children's charities and what better one to support than Barely Born. The money goes to helping children who are already experiencing difficulties at the very beginning of their life."
The money will help towards purchasing respiration monitors, a camera and flat-screen televisions for the unit.
