SOUTHERN Water has escaped serious enforcement action after one of its pumping stations discharged raw sewage into the River Medina. The water company said lessons had been learnt following the ‘regrettable incident’ in the early hours of April 3, when all three pumps at Fairlee Pumping Station failed and discharged sewage into the river and the sea off Cowes for up to 12 hours. An Environment Agency (EA) pollution control team was deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control and limit the impact on the watercourse, the cost of which will be met by Southern Water.Following an investigation, an EA spokesman told the County Press this week: “Our prompt and sustained response meant the incident had a minimal impact on the environment. “We took enforcement action by sending a warning letter to Southern Water.”The water company, which blamed the failure on a build-up of items, including sanitary products and cleaning wipes, which blocked the pumps, said improvements had been carried out at the pumping station to prevent such failures in the future.A spokesman said: “Lessons have been learnt since the regrettable incident in April. We have carried out numerous practical improvements at Fairlee Pumping Station, including improvements to the site’s alarm and storage systems. “We’ve put together a detailed contingency plan, meaning we’re better prepared should future problems occur. “As part of the plan, we undertook modelling of the site, including storage and flow rates, to tell us exactly how much water is entering the site and from where.“This work has been carried out with ongoing discussion with the EA.”Reporter: firstname.lastname@example.org
