THE Lib Dems have chosen a candidate to contest Bob Seely's Isle of Wight Council seat.

Mr Seely told the County Press he would step down as the Central Wight Cllr before Christmas to concentrate on his role as the Island's MP.

Former engineer and science teacher Nick Stuart, who lives in Brighstone and runs a fencing club, will stand for the Lib Dems against Conservative candidate Steve Hastings.

He was selected at a meeting of local members, held in Brighstone on Tuesday this week.

Mr Stuart said: "During the General Election I campaigned in this area and have met many of the residents and I have listened to their concerns on issues such as transport, the environment, social care and housing. The Liberal Democrats are the only party with the community at the heart of their policies. I want to make this council work for all the residents across Central Wight by giving them a voice."

The by-election for Mr Seely's seat will be held on January 25.

The Isle of Wight Labour Party said last week it was in the process of selecting a candidate and the Green Party is set to hold an open primary on Monday.
