OPENING hours at most Island libraries are cut from Monday.

As part of reductions, Niton and Brighstone will open only for ten hours a week — a cut of almost 50 per cent —and Shanklin, East Cowes, Bembridge, Ventnor, Sandown, Freshwater and Cowes will open for at least 21 hours. Most currently open for much longer.

The Lord Louis Library, Newport, will open for 50 hours a week, eight more than at present and Ryde Library for 42 hours, which is five-and-a-half hours less. The Isle of Wight Council says to give library users a chance to become familiar with the new times, it will not issue any fines for the late returns of books, DVDs or CDs until Monday, April 18.
