The borough's housing strategy has been labelled 'below average' by a central Government department.

Although Barnet scores highly for its management skills in the Government Office for London's assessment, overall it is placed in the lower quarter of all boroughs in London.

The results of this assessment were due to be discussed at a meeting of the social affairs policy development committee on Tuesday night.

In comparison with the London boroughs of Croydon, Hammersmith and Fulham and Waltham Forest, Barnet came out worst on its programme spend, scoring just 89 per cent for its overall performance. The areas of housing strategy, programme delivery and tenant involvement were seen as being below average, as was the overall assessment, but housing management was deemed to be above average. Criticisms included no information about new housing projects for the year ahead and insufficient details of consultation between residents and tenants associations.

In the report discussed at the meeting, council officers were keen to point out that Barnet's housing management performance, which is highly rated, has been ignored by the assessment.
