100 YEARS AGO

OCTOBER 27 1917

The admiral of Osborne College stated in the House of Commons he would favour an entirely new site for the naval academy.

Captain Douglas Hall stated conditions at the college had been investigated and several structural alterations carried out.

The number of cadets had also reduced to 300, to reduce the chance of epidemics.

However, the Admiral believed a new naval college should be built on an entirely new site.



75 YEARS AGO

OCTOBER 31 1942

The Island reached its rose hip target, collecting two tons over the summer.

The plant was considered essential, due to the need for rose hip syrup, which was used during the war as a vitamin C supplement.

Children helped in the collection - although many of the bushes were out of their reach, so parental help was needed.



50 YEARS AGO

NOVEMBER 4 1967

For the first time since it started operating, the Yarmouth-Lymington car ferry was marooned at Yarmouth Quay by a gale on Friday night.

With a number of cars and passengers on board, the ferry left Yarmouth just after 6pm.

The ferry was forced to return to the Island a short while later.


25 YEARS AGO

NOVEMBER 30 1992

A rare breed of goat arrived on the Island to take up residence at Bonchurch Down.

The long-haired, horned British goats were released on the Down to help conserve the grassland landscape which was threatened by scrubby vegetation and Holm Oak trees.

The six goats released have since bred and now the herd numbers more than 45.


10 YEARS AGO

OCTOBER 26 2007

A new global TV channel was scheduled to go live from the IW in December.

The UK Entertainment Channel was set to be a mixture of family entertainment, films and live TV.

There was also announced a new Island news programme.
