SCORES of Cowes residents turned out in force at Northwood Cemetery’s first ever open day, staged by the friends of the cemetery.

Around 150 people, including Island MP Andrew Turner, visited the cemetery, where they were able to find out more information about their loved ones from the friends’ archivist.

People were also able to lay flowers on the graves of relatives and enjoy tea and cakes provided by the friends. There were also guided walks around the cemetery grounds.

The open and celebration day was the brainchild of the chairman of the Friends of Northwood Cemetery, Lora Peacey-Wilcox.

She said: "I wanted the community to feel included and part of the cemetery. I wanted to show it is a very beautiful place and not just a sad place."
