A RETIRED couple from St Helens have scooped a £5,000 prize after winning the independent lifeboat lottery.

Peggy Samuelson, 83, and husband Kenneth, 96, of Yar Quay, St Helens, were presented with their winning cheque at a ceremony at Ryde Inshore Rescue’s headquarters at Appley on Sunday.

The Lifeboat Lotto has been running for two years and raises cash for the independent lifeboats at Freshwater, Sandown and Ryde. Peggy said the couple would use some of the money to buy a reclining chair and a tablet.

She said: "It was a great surprise. We had completely forgotten we had entered."

It really is astounding that people who profess to be journalists can be so careless.
