Major Asda roadworks due to finish in March
Wednesday, January 11, 2017 - 13:13
WORK on St George's Way, as part of the Asda development, should finish in March as planned, the Isle of Wight Council has said.
Traffic lights at the exit from Marks and Spencer and Morrisons are being upgraded and will incorporate pedestrian crossing phases.
On Monday, work will begin to create new traffic signals at the junction of Shide Road and St George’s Way.
Work to install the new lights is expected to be completed by Friday, March 3, and will involve minor alterations to the existing layout of the junction and the introduction of a new roundabout.
As a result of the works, the short section of Shide Road between St George’s Way and Medina Avenue will become one way in an east to west direction, resulting in all traffic travelling east along Shide Road (from Whitepit Lane) turning left and using the one-way traffic system that is already in place.
At the same time traffic leaving Newport will be diverted around the east side of the new roundabout to allow the western half to be built.
Access to Newport Football Club will remain open throughout the works.
The council said a variety of factors, such as weather and emergency works, can affect the timing of the work and the programme is subject to change.
Updates will be issued as each phase progresses.
The council has thanked residents for their patience while the major road works are carried out.
