Making a stand against signs

A FISHBOURNE parish councillor has quit in a row over boundary signs, branding the council arrogant and out of touch.

Lesley Abraham, who only joined the council this year, has resigned in protest, after claiming the Welcome to Fishbourne signs at Wootton Bridge, Firestone Copse Road and Quarr Abbey are incorrect and misleading.

Mrs Abraham, a Kite Hill resident, said she accepted Kite Hill was in the parish of Fishbourne but maintained it was in the village of Wootton Bridge. She said the signs incorrectly indicated to people they were arriving in Fishbourne.

"I’m fed up with their attitude. Wootton Bridge is an ancient village and I can’t believe parish councils have the right to obliterate a village name like this. Our very existence is being denied and it’s appalling," she said.

"I feel very strongly Kite Hill is not represented. We have traffic problems and other issues but nothing is being done about them and there is no mention of Kite Hill on the parish council website."

Fishbourne Parish Council has always maintained residents were widely consulted about the signs, designed to create a sense of unity and togetherness, but chairman Cllr Peter Johnson said he had no wish to become further embroiled in the argument.

"It is a pity Mrs Abraham decided to resign rather than stay on and discuss the issue," he said.

Mrs Abraham has vowed to continue her campaign against the signs.
