A MAN was thrown across a room after lightning hit the fixtures of a window, as powerful storms hit the Isle of Wight overnight.

The incident occurred at around 1.13am and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service took the person to St Mary's Hospital.

The extent of his injuries is not yet known.

Firefighters also attended to check the building.

At around 12.40am, a 4m by 4m section of roof felt came off a building on Avenue Road, Sandown, due to strong winds.

A spokesman for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "The first thing we had to do was establish where the roof felt had come from. We then checked the structural integrity of the residential premises."

Fire crews were also dispatched to Morton Brook, Yarbridge, to secure a fallen street lamp before Island Roads could attend.

I remember the old saying about it being a second a mile between lightning and thunder. Of course, sound travels at 330 metres a second at sea level, if memory serves and light travels at 186,000 miles per second. In other words, that storm could be five times or so closer than you think. Be careful peeps!!

God having a delivery of coal. 'Believable' at the time when nearly everybody had a coal fire and the site of a coal man was commonplace
