Man rescued from mud

A 24-year-old man had to be rescued by Coastguards on the Isle of Wight yesterday (Sunday) after becoming trapped in mud at Fort Warden, near Colwell.

The incident has prompted fresh warnings to avoid the area, where there have been recent landslips.

Needles Coastguard was called to assist at 1.58pm and the rescue took half an hour.

The man was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Ray Morey, of Needles Coastguard, said: "The area is dangerous and water-logged. People can easily fall.

"Please do not ignore the warnings previously issued by the Isle of Wight Council."

The Isle of Wight Council closed a section of path and sea wall between Totland and Colwell following landslides after heavy rain in December.

Despite the path being fenced off, several people have been seen using the route.

Very well put Mr Miller. A bridge would sound the death knell for this Island and all that is good about it. The ferries are expensive and inconvenient, but at least they keep out the riff-raff.

im with you annabel, fixed link the sooner the better. we have a huge shortage of burglars, thieves and twocers on the island compared to the mainland and its about time this imbalance was addressed. luckily i rent furnished so i dont have a great lot to lose, bring it on !!

Are you sure you can't walk across at low tide? I thought you could at Hurst Point. Isn't it so shallow that you can play cricket there?

I'm all for a fixed link bridge, but I think you've over-estimated the story a bit there, Annabel! Bless x

Glad to hear that the young man concerned is safe. Hopefully this story will illustrate to other readers the folly of not having a bridge to the mainland. As I understand it a fixed link would have to be sited at the western end of the island for some reason, and if we had one then the unfortunate individual in this story would have been able to walk to the mainland in complete safety rather than risk life and limb trying to walk through the mud at low tide. How can anyone with an iota of sense oppose the bridge when the column inches are filled with stories of near misses such as these? Will it really take someone to die before the powers that be sit up and take notice?
