POLICE appealed for witnesses after the latest accident at a blackspot which left an Isle of Wight driver with life-threatening head injuries.

They said a 34-year-old West Wight man was cut free from his green Ford Focus after a collision with a Southern Vectis bus at Freshwater shortly before 9pm on Saturday.

The collision at Copse Lane, Norton Green, resulted in fire and rescue crews being called from Freshwater, Yarmouth and Newport.

Specialist equipment was used to cut the roof off the car to free the man who was taken by ambulance to St Mary's Hospital.

Several bus passengers were hurt  - although it was understood there were no serious injuries.

The bus sustained extensive front end damage and recovery of the vehicle took three hours according to Stag Lane Motors.

Police launched Operation Troon and closed the road for seven hours while they investigated the cause of the collision.

They appealed for witnesses to contact them on 101, quoting Operation Troon.
