POLICE have arrested and bailed a man following a stabbing in Shanklin on Christmas Eve.

A 47 year old man was taken to St Mary's Hospital, Newport, following the attack, on Saturday evening.

The police and the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service were called to an address near Shanklin Community Library, Victoria Avenue, at around 7.30pm.

The victim's injuries are not thought to be life threatening, the police have confirmed.

*A 30 year old man from Newport who arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent was bailed today to return to Newport Police Station on March 28 while police continue its investigations.

The incident came just hours after a man was killed in an assault in Ventnor.

The attack was condemned by Shanklin mayor, Cllr Jon Gilbey.

He said: "I'm quite shocked about this and the other incident in Ventnor - especially at this time of year. It's all a bit close to home and doesn't bear thinking about.

"I absolutely condemn any violence in our town. It was probably drink or drug-related, but this is something we unfortunately have to live with these days."
